Policemen posted in Karimnagar where TRS chief is camping |

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao geared up his party organisation for his indefinite fast beginning at 11 a.m. at Siddipet on Sunday even as the police machinery prepared itself to foil his plans and counter the fallout.
Although the police top brass refused to reveal its hand, thousands of policemen were posted in Karimnagar where KCR was camping on Saturday, an indication that they may take him into custody even before he could travel to Siddipet in Medak district, 70 km away. All that a senior officer would say was that the action would depend on situation prevailing on ground.
Sensing the plans of the government, Mr. Rao said he would end his life for the cause of Telangana statehood if the government foiled his proposed fast. He said he would continue his hunger strike even in jail.
Police took into preventive custody dozens of TRS leaders and workers in several parts of Telangana. Prominent among those arrested was Janashakti leader Kura Rajanna. He was picked up while leading a rasta-roko at Siddipet after the police foiled his meeting with TRS workers. He was later shifted to Sangareddy. Some people who were arrested near Dubbaka launched a fast in the local police station.
In Karimnagar, police personnel outnumbered the TRS workers outside Mr. Rao's residence. A mobile party also moved around continuously near the house.
Visitors to the town screened at several check-posts en route the town. They even undertook a thorough check of hotels and the bus station much to the embarrassment of visitors.

Mr. Rao was taken into custody on the outskirts of Karimnagar after police gave an impression that they would not obstruct his journey to Siddipet. Amid much drama and numerous demonstrations en route, KCR was whisked away to Khammam town where a magistrate remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days in connection with cases registered against him earlier. As news of his arrest spread, pitched battles were fought between students and police on Osmania University campus here resulting in injuries to several youth. In Siddipet, a strong police force descended on Rangathampalli, venue of KCR's proposed fast, and arrested all the important leaders who wanted to begin a hunger strike and dispersed the party supporters. Local TRS MLA T. Harish Rao doused himself with petrol, but the police managed to break the large human cordon and arrested him. KCR's son, K. T. Rama Rao, was arrested in Warangal.
While almost all the major Opposition parties, condemned KCR's arrest, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah justified the police action on the ground that the TRS leader had been making provocative speeches during his recent tour of Telangana which were likely to endanger peace and tranquility. Moreover, the Government could not remain a silent spectator when he was repeatedly threatening to end his life, he aded.

Students clash with police; at least two dozen of them injured in lathi-charge, stone-throwing |

HYDERABAD: In a day of fast-paced developments following the arrest of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao in Karimnagar, violence broke out on the Osmania University campus with a section of students clashing with policemen and protesters blocking roads at several places after attacking city buses, on Monday.
The otherwise peaceful atmosphere on the OU campus charged up as news broke out about the arrest of TRS chief in the morning. Policemen in riot gear stationed in good numbers became the targets of irate students who repeatedly clashed with them leading to several rounds of lathi-charge at different places on the campus. At least two dozen students were injured in lathi-charge and stone hurling incidents. The State capital witnessed traffic blockades at several places as groups of TRS activists came out on the roads. City buses became the target for the agitated mobs forcing authorities to scale down plying buses. However, a semblance was restored by evening after the policemen withdrew following directives from the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Tension built up on the campus from Saturday night with more than a thousand students gathering at Arts College. Students residing in hostels rushed out targeting policemen who were present in good numbers. There was heavy stone pelting on the police at Krishnaveni hostel. As the slogan-shouting students were chased away, they regrouped again and the see-saw battles continued through out the day.
The live coverage of the severe lathi-charge had furthered incensed the students. The rumour that an injured students had died led to severe confrontation between the students and the police around noon. The announcements of police that no student had died had little impact.
When police tried to enter the hostel, students locked the main door from inside. Some students picked up an argument with ACP M. Kistaiah and OU Inspector Anjaneeyulu holding them responsible for the student's death. "It's inhuman on part of the police. They beat even visually handicapped students mercilessly," complained Raj Kumar, an M.Sc. second year student. He said two M.Sc. students — Lingaswamy and Mangesh — sustained serious head injuries.
Police later clarified that Venkanna Nayak (24), a student of political science in PG College suffering from epileptic seizures, died in the morning. Nayak, hailing from Warangal district, had no connection with the protests.
Later in the evening, students squatted on the main road at Arts College to protesting the high-handed behaviour of the police. A group of students barged into the administrative block and damaged windowpanes. The sit-in demonstrations spread to Tarnaka by night fall. Traffic was being diverted via other routes.
Meanwhile students at Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University staged a peaceful dharna in front of a hostel protesting K. Chandrasekhar Rao's arrest. The students came out in a rally, but the police prevented them from leaving the campus. Later, they staged a dharna for some time and dispersed.

KCR's withdrawal from fast draws flak from student community which vows to carry on agitation
HYDERABAD: The two-day-long agitation of students in different universities of Telangana in support of TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao turned against him on Monday evening, after he announced withdrawal of his fast.
Over 2,000 students assembled before the College of Arts and Social Sciences on Osmania University campus, where a marathon meeting was held in support of the TRS president earlier, were now spitting fire and accusing him of backstabbing. The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Telangana Ikya Karyacharana (TIK) committee of different other student organisations took out separate 'mock KCR funeral processions' on the campus.
The students, who had been receiving support from different associations like Telangana Lawyers Forum at the meeting in front of Arts College, were chalking out an action plan for Tuesday, when they came to know of KCR's withdrawal of fast. Within minutes, students from different hostels flooded the Arts College meeting venue abusing KCR.
While the TIK activists went in procession from the Arts College to NCC gate, the ABVP workers took out a rally from the New Research Scholars Hostel to the Arts College. Separate rallies raising anti-KCR slogans also started from different hostels culminating in another massive meeting at Arts College.
Cutting across organisation lines, the students vowed to not to stop but to continue the agitation for Telangana statehood. They decided to meet again on Tuesday and chalk out to new strategy to take forward the movement without involving any political party.
A rally protesting KCR's withdrawal was also taken out by students at the Telangana University at Dichpally. The agitating students burnt his effigy and decided to take up an independent agitation
