Hindupur (also known as Hindupuram) is a city and a municipality in Anantapur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Hindupur was given its name by a Maratha Chieftain called Murari Rao, who apparently named this town after his father Hindoji Rao. Hindupur is historically famous for various goods such as silk, jaggery and red, dry, chillies. Nandamuri Tharaka Ramarao gaaru has been elected continuously 3 times as MLA from Hindupur. It is situated at a distance of 100 kilometers from the Garden city of Bengaluru and 14 kilometers from Lepakshi. The nearest airport is Bengaluru's International Airport - Devanahalli (70 km).
Geography
Hindupur is located at 13°50′N 77°29′E / 13.83°N 77.49°E / 13.83; 77.49.[1] It has an average elevation of 621 metres (2037 feet).

Hindupur has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%[citation needed]. Bordering Karnataka, Kannada is widely spoken in this town, in addition to the native language of Telugu.
Civic issues
Hindupur is prone to intense heat during the summer and ground water reserves in this area are scarce. This region is prone to droughts during summer.
Hospitals and emergency facilities are largely inadequate at best and many people are infected by diseases like cholera, diarrhea in summer and Chikungunya, malaria and dengue fever in winter[citation needed].
Hindupur's future expansion is severely restricted due to the scarcity of water. It is not uncommon to see people buying water at premium prices(Lately around 2 rupeees / bucket),usually through private "Tankers". These tankers basically pump out water using powerful borewells, essentially depleting ground water reserves[citation needed]. But now the Thungabadra water solves the water problem from 2009 onwards.
Banks
Hindupur is a financial centre. Jewellery, Gold business and cinema seem to have a special place. Most nationalised banks have branches in Hindupur . Some of these banks have ATM and locker facilities.
